Recueil de Cartes Geographiques, Plans, Vues et MŽdailles de l'Ancienne Grece, Relatifs au Voyage du Jeune Anachar by BarbiŽ du Bocage, Jean-Denis: 1788

Views and Medals of Ancient Greece, is complete except for the first map "La Grece & ses iles"; a low-resolution facsimile has been bound in in its place pending the possible acquisition of an original map. This copy thus contains 24 original maps (two fold-out, 17 double-page and five single-page) plus nine other plans, views etc. Drawn by Jean-Denis Barbie du Bocage (1760 - 1825), this collection was published to accompany "Voyage du Jeune Anacharsis en Grece" (The Voyage of Anacharsis the Younger to Greece) written in French by Jean Jacques Barthelemy, a classical scholar and Jesuit, in 1788. The 4-volume work is an imaginary travel journal, one of the first historical novels. Its protagonist, a Scythian, is supposedly descended from the philosopher Anacharsis, who travelled from his homeland on the northern shores of the Black Sea to Athens in the early 6th century BC. Barbie de Bocage was a French cartographer and cosmographer active in Paris during late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was trained as a cartographer and engraver in the workshops of master mapmaker J. B. B. d'Anville, and subsequently held the post of Royal Librarian of France. When acquired, this copy was disbound; it has been finely rebound in beige buckram with a recessed printed title panel on the front board. Care was taken not to unstitch the original type block so that one plate,  While the paper is age-toned, the pages are remarkably free of soiling, staining and foxing. Scans will be sent on request. While the seller fully understands that the eventual purchaser is fully entitled to do with the book what he or she wishes, he requests that book breakers kindly refrain from buying this rare and beautiful copy as it surely belongs alongside an early edition of Barthelemy's masterpiece.
